TI - Mathematics and music AU - Tayor, James AB - If we consider a single note played in isolation, there is not much we can say about whether it is pleasing or not. When we play a succession of notes, things become more interesting, but the actual pitch of the notes is still not very critical, and unaccompanied singers use pitch variation to great effect. Whether this is pleasing or not is often a matter of cultural tradition. It is when notes are played at the same time that we begin to discern that some notes “fit together” better than others.
